Nursing in the Community (Hyflex PN)
Course Information
This course will introduce students to the foundational aspects of community-based nursing while building on their existing knowledge base. It will encourage the transference of existing knowledge while synthesizing learned skills with the theory of community nursing in the community setting. Key components in this course include community-based nursing across the lifespan, cultural and family influences, assessing the target community, epidemiology, effective client teaching methodologies, case review, and management. Students will participate in a variety of learning opportunities, such as case studies, health promotion activities, and engagement with guest speakers. The following theoretical beliefs and approaches to nursing practice are integrated throughout: humanistic caring, reflective practice, therapeutic use of self, health promotion, adaptation, and critical thinking. This course prepares the student for work as an entry-level Community Health Worker (CHW). Prerequisites: PN Clinical III (NRSG 198), Nursing Care of Families (NRSG 67), Professional Aspects of Nursing A (NRSG 96), Practical Nursing Theory III (NRSG 93), PN Skills III (NRSG 248) Corequisites: PN Clinical IVA (NRSG 23), PN Clinical IVB (NRSG 24), Practical Nursing Theory IV (NRSG 94), Professional Aspects of Nursing B (NRSG 97), PN Skills IV (NRSG 249)
